Overview
Bloom, a collaboration with Kline Swonger. is a seven-foot column of white plexiglass. Two feet square and trimmed in utilitarian black, it borrows the visual language of the signal boxes, equipment cabinets, and civic hardware we walk past without seeing. During the day it is quiet on purpose, waiting.
At dusk it begins to glow with gentle animations, establishing a resting state that mimics the digital hum of the city. This is not the artwork, but merely an invitation. Next to the column is a small platform. With a step or jump, Bloom awakens in a wash of color. Vibrant animations that respond to your movement paint the tower. When you step off, it fades back into dormancy.
Bloom asks you for something small, public, and a little embarrassing: the willingness to be the person standing on the platform while strangers watch.
Bloom was first exhibited in 2026 at the San Diego Collaborative Art Project event YOUtopia.
